Michinobu drew the pictures for several woodblock-printed picture books published in the early to mid-1700s. One of these books, entitled Tekagami Oshi-e (i.e., Drawing Models for Oshi-e) and published in 1736, included the twenty-five pictures of flowers-and-birds that are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Oshi-e is a type of Japanese art in which pictures are made by cutting cardboard-backed cloth to the desired shape. Michinobu’s black-and-white line drawings were relatively complicated so the oshi-e maker would require some skill to reproduce them.
